In 2024, CM MINING executed 47 high-value mineral shipments through Durban Port—totaling $3.2 billion in facilitated trade—including 182,000 metric tons of copper concentrate and 24,500 kilograms of gold from South African operations. This represented the largest single-year mineral export volume through Durban by a non-mining-house exporter, achieved through a dedicated logistics partnership with Durban Port Logistics Ltd (DPL).

Challenge

Durban Port faced chronic congestion, with average container dwell times exceeding 9 days. For time-sensitive mineral shipments requiring pre-cleared customs and secure handling, delays risked demurrage fees exceeding $12M per month and potential buyer penalties for late delivery.

Solution

CM MINING and DPL co-developed a priority corridor: pre-submitted digital customs packs, reserved container slots, and 24/7 secure staging zones. Our UK team synchronized export permits, assay reports, and EUDR dossiers 14 days ahead of vessel arrival. Real-time GPS tracking and automated alerts enabled proactive issue resolution cutting administrative handoffs by 60%.

Outcome:

Average port dwell time dropped to 2.3 days across all 47 shipments. Zero demurrage fees were incurred, and on-time delivery hit 99.8%. DPL extended the partnership through 2028, designating CM MINING as a Tier-1 Priority Exporter.
